Important Tips for European Travelers Visiting Saudi Arabia

1

Respect Local Culture and Traditions :

Saudi Arabia is a country deeply rooted in rich culture and conservative values. Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly in public, especially when visiting religious sites or traditional villages.

👚 For women: Wearing an abaya or headscarf is not mandatory, but modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees is strongly recommended.
👕 For men: Avoid wearing shorts or sportswear in public areas, particularly outside resorts or tourist zones.

When visiting Medina, it is especially advisable for women to wear a modest abaya and a head covering in respect of the city’s spiritual atmosphere.

4

Currency and Payments

The official currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR), which is pegged at 3.75 to the US dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted, but foreign currency is rarely used by local merchants. We recommend carrying some cash when visiting rural areas or traditional markets.

💳 Digital payments like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are also widely used in major cities

9

Health and Emergencies

Saudi Arabia has a world-class healthcare system. It’s always wise to travel with comprehensive health insurance.

📞 In case of emergency:
• Police: 999
• Ambulance: 997
• Tourism Assistance (Ministry of Tourism): 930

2

Be Mindful of Prayer Times

Prayer is a central part of daily life in Saudi Arabia. During prayer times, some shops and services may pause briefly — a perfect time to rest or reflect.

🕌 In Medina and Mecca, non-Muslims are respectfully asked not to enter the holy mosque areas.

3

Weather Awareness

The climate varies across the country. While Riyadh can be hot and dry, regions like Asir or the mountains of AlUla enjoy milder temperatures.

Use sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses during the day, and stay hydrated throughout your trip.

5

Greetings and Social Etiquette

The traditional Saudi greeting begins with “As-salamu alaikum” (peace be upon you). Men usually shake hands with men, and women with women. Handshakes between men and women are based on personal comfort — let the local person initiate.

🤝 Politeness and respect are essential. Locals will always appreciate your effort to learn a few basic Arabic words.

7

Getting Around

Saudi Arabia offers excellent transport infrastructure. You can easily get around using luxury coaches, taxis, or apps like Uber and Careem.

🚘 If you prefer to drive yourself, make sure to carry an international driver’s license and valid insurance.

8

Personal Safety

Saudi Arabia is one of the safest countries in the region. That said, keep your passport in a secure location and use the hotel safe when available.

6

Drinking Water

Tap water in Saudi Arabia is generally safe for everyday use like brushing teeth or bathing, but it is not typically consumed directly.

🥤 We recommend drinking bottled or filtered water, which is widely available and affordable — from hotels to roadside stores.
🚰 Some hotels and homes have advanced filtration systems that make tap water drinkable, but it’s always best to ask before consuming.

10

Photography

Photography is permitted in most public spaces. However, always ask permission before photographing people — especially in rural areas or around families.
Some sites allow mobile phone photography but restrict DSLR or professional cameras. A high-quality phone camera is often the most practical option.

📸 Avoid taking photos of government or military buildings, and always follow posted signage regarding photography.

11

Enjoy Every Moment of the Journey

Saudi Arabia is not only history and religion — it’s also music, cuisine, nature, and warm-hearted people.
Let your heart open to discovery, and prepare for a journey that may transform your view of the world.
